The HBCU Scholarship Gala Set For August 26th at 7pm

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The HBCU Scholarship Gala is a community-based initiative that celebrates the impact and importance of the 11 HBCU's in North Carolina.  The purpose of the initiative is to raise money for scholarships for deserving students at each institution and to honor the achievements of the alumni of each school.

The three alumni for WSSU that will be honored are Dr. Sylvia Flack, WSSU College Administrator, Retired; Mr. Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, NBA Player, Retired; and Mr. Timmy Newsome, NFL Player, Retired.

The "Living Legends Scholarship Gala" will be August 26, 2017, at 7 p.m. in the Grand Pavilion Ballroom of the Embassy Suites, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This community-based initiative celebrates the impact and importance of the eleven Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), in North Carolina.

The core purposes of the initiative are:
To raise money for scholarships for students at each school. To honor the achievements of three alumni of each school. To inspire current students to become "Living Legends" with a commemorative calendar of the honorees, that is also used as a fundraiser by civic, social, alumni and church groups.

The Honorary Chairs are Ms. Andrea Harris (retired executive NC Institute for Minority Economic Development), Coach William Hayes (retired College Athletic Director and Head Football Coach) and the Honorable Larry Hall (Secretary of the NC Dept. of Military and Veterans Affairs).

Currently enrolled students at our NC HBCU's can apply for a scholarship on the website. This is a need-based award with consideration given to merit, service, and character.  The intent is to help students with the potential to become HBCU Living Legends. The scholarship is for $1,000.00.  Funds can supplement college-related expenses, such as books, lab fees, and other incidental expenses.
