WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem State got a walk off grand slam home run from Tyler Hickernell in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel the Rams to a 8-6 victory over St. Andrew's College.
With the win, the WSSU Rams improve to 26-8 overall, while S. Andrew's falls 19-15.
The Saint Andrew's Knights jumped out quick on the Rams plating two runs on a Michael Durig double to deep center field.
WSSU would finally get on the board in the fifth inning, as Tyler Hickernell started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a Conner Andrus fielder's choice. Both runners would move up on a passed ball putting runners in scoring position with one out. Brandon Harrison's sacrifice fly would score Hickernell to pull the Rams to within one run at 2-1.
Winston-Salem State would tie the game in the eighth inning when Travis Moore started the inning with a walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Paco Martin that would move Moore to second base. German Reyes would single moving Moore to third, before an Aaron Jones single to right field scored Moore, tying the game at 2-1 heading to the ninth.
But Saint Andrew's was not done and would come right back with a huge inning of their own, as Daniel Whitecavage would hit a grand slam home run off of WSSU's Michael Drye to give the knights as 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, setting up all the dramatics.
The inning would start with three consecutive walks, to Conner Andrus, Brandon Harrison and Travis Moore. Paco Martin flied out to center field on the sacrifice, scoring Andrus. German Reyes would single to center,s coring Harrison and pulling the Rams to within two at 6-4. After a Aaron Jones fly out, Levin Grassley walked, loading the bases with two out for Tyler Hickernell. Hickernell would blast a pitch to deep left field and into the night for the dramatic 8-6 win with the walk off grand slam.
German Reyes led the Rams hitting attack, going three for five with one run scored and one rbi, while Aaron Jones finished two for five with a run batted in. Tyler Hickernell finished one for two with two runs scored and four rbi's. Paco Martin also picked up a rbi for the Rams.
Michael Drye picked up the win for Winston-Salem State.
Daniel Whitecavage led the Knights going two for five twith two runs scored and four rbi's, while Matthew Beauchemin finished two for four with a run scored. Matt McCue went two for four with a run scored. He also picked up the loss for Saint Andrews.
