Seventh Inning Collapse Costs Rams in 7-5 Loss to Concord

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-3) played a solid game, but the team fell victim to a late rally in a 7-5 loss to the Concord Mountain Lions (1-3), Friday afternoon. The Rams took a 5-2 lead into the seventh inning, but the team allowed five runs to the Mountain Lions to take the hard-fought loss.

The loss came in spite of a great overall effort by the Rams. The team totaled eight hits in the game with just one error, but could not keep up with a hard-hitting Mountain Lions team that had nine hits. WSSU senior outfielder Randy Norris led the way for the Rams with a three-for-four batting effort with a pair of RBI. Junior shortstop Nick Williams was solid as well, going one-for-two with an RBI as well. Junior outfielder Brandon Ford added an RBI triple as well.

Things looked good early for the Rams. After allowing a pair of first inning runs to the Mountain Lions, the Rams responded with a third-inning run when Ford's RBI triple drove in Matthew Mauldin. The Rams took the lead in the fourth inning when Williams hit an RBI single to score designated hitter John Garcia and followed the effort with a Norris two-RBI single to score Williams and Brandon Nania to go ahead 4-2. The Rams struck again in the fifth inning when third baseman Emilio Abreu hit an RBI single for Garcia to score a second time.

The lead would not hold up, however, as the Rams allowed five seventh inning runs to the Mountain Lions. The effort included a WSSU fielding error along with a pair of walks.

WSSU junior Marcus McKoy (0-1) took the pitching loss for the Rams. He allowed a pair of runs to the Mountain Lions, including the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Redshirt-freshman Jalen Scott got the start for the Rams with two innings of action. Junior Tomas Goco had the longest action pitching three innings with two runs allowed (two earned) along with three strikeouts.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-3 overall. The team will return to action, Tuesday afternoon when the team hosts the Tusculum Pioneers in a 5:00 p.m. game. For more information on Rams baseball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
