Rams Picked Atop CIAA Southern Division in CIAA Preseason Predicted Order of Finish

CHARLOTTE, NC – The target is on the Winston-Salem Salem State Rams as the WSSU men's basketball team was picked to finish fourth overall and on top of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division, Wednesday evening. The WSSU duo of sophomore guard Robert Colon and junior forward William Crandell were also named to the 2017-18 Preseason All-CIAA team as well.

The expectations will be high for the Rams after being predicted to finish among the top four teams in the conference and are the preseason picks to win the CIAA Southern Division. Last season, the Rams finished the season with a 13-14 overall record and an 8-8 record in CIAA play. The team also tied for second place in the CIAA Southern Division with a 6-4 record in division play. After the impressive season, the Rams will look to continue to improve heading into 2017-18.

Leading the way for the Rams will be the duo of sophomore guard Robert Colon and junior forward William Crandell. The pair was honored with selections to the 2017-18 Preseason All-CIAA team, Wednesday evening. Colon finished last season as the second leading scorer in the CIAA at 17.6 points per game. He also ranked third in the conference in three-pointers made with 67. Crandell earned his spot on the team for the second straight season after earning All-CIAA honors last season. He finished the season ranked fourth in the conference in field goal percentage a .573 (146-255).

Winston-Salem State head coach James Wilhelmi will be a part of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball Media Day tomorrow at the Renaissance Charlotte Suites Hotel in Charlotte, N.C. WSSU is scheduled to take the podium at 9:00 a.m.
