Balanced Attack Leads Rams to 83-72 Win at Livingstone

 

SALISBURY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (10-10, 5-6 CIAA) utilized a balanced attack to claim a key 83-72 road win over the Livingstone Blue Bears (5-16, 0-11 CIAA), Saturday. The Rams took the win behind a balanced scoring attack with four players getting double-digit scoring in the game.

The Rams had another great offensive performance in the win. The team shot a solid 43.1% (31-of-72) from the floor. WSSU senior center Kandace Tate led the way with 23 points off the bench in the game. Junior forward Brionna Pate added 15 points with nine rebounds as well. Senior forward Briana Arnold added a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds in the game.

The game slow at the beginning, but the Rams soon took over and never looked back. Livingstone took an early lead in the game with a 7-5 lead over the Rams, but the team Rams soon regained control when Edwards hit a three-pointer with 4:29 left in the first quarter to go on top, 12-7. However, it was the last field goal for the Rams as Livingstone took a 15-12 lead at the end of the quarter. From there, the Rams took control with a dominating second quarter. The team outscored the Blue Bears, 21-7 during the quarter. After falling behind 12-16, the Rams exploded for a 21-6 run that left the team with a 33-22 at halftime.

The second half saw more of the same as the Rams continued to pour it on and claimed the win. The Rams pushed their lead to as many as 18 points, 48-30 after a free throw from freshman guard Teara Johnson with 4:13 left in the quarter. Livingstone would work to chip away at the WSSU lead, but the Rams finished the quarter with the 57-41 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Rams eased up, but would not let the win slip away. The Rams would not score for the final two minutes of the game, but the team would never allow the Blue Bears to get no closer than 11 points to claim the 83-72 win.

With the win, the Rams improve to 10-10 overall and 5-6 in CIAA play. More importantly, the Rams improve to 4-1 in CIAA Southern Division play. The Rams will return to action, Wednesday when the team heads to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the Saint Augustine's Falcons in a 5:30 p.m. game.
