WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (10-10) scored a big run late for a big 8-7 win over the West Virginia State Yellowjackets (5-1) at Washington Park, Friday afternoon. The Lady Rams broke out early and held off a furious rally by the Yellowjackets to pick up the win.
The Lady Rams broke out on offense with eight runs scored and totaled seven hits to take home the victory. WSSU senior infielder Britney Cato led the way for the team with a two-for-three effort at the plate with an RBI and a run scored in the game. Sophomore catcher Bria Jones added a one-for-three effort with two RBI while sophomore pitcher Monet Daly added a hit with two runs scored and two RBI in the win.
The Lady Rams took control of the game early with five second inning runs. Cato got things going with an RBI single, followed by a pair of WSSU runs scoring on a WVSU dropped fly ball. The Lady Rams took advantage of another WVSU fielding error to score a pair of runs to close out the five-run inning. The Lady Rams scored once again in the third inning when a Yellowjacket throwing error allowed a WSSU run. WSSU senior Nikki Lynch drove in Daly in the fourth inning to put the team ahead 7-3.
From there, the team held off a furious rally by the Yellowjackets. WSSU allowed four runs in the final two innings of the game to take a 7-7 tie into the bottom of the seventh inning. WSSU sophomore Shantel Haskins struck out, but the dropped ball by the catcher forced a throw to first base, allowing junior outfielder Andreya O'Brien to end the game with the 8-7 WSSU win.
Lady Rams sophomore Monet Daly (1-0) took home the pitching win. She pitched all seven innings of the game, allowing 10 runs with two strikeouts and a walk.
The Lady Rams will return to action tomorrow when the team takes part in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Cluster. The team will take on Lincoln (Pa.) at 11:00 a.m., followed by a 1:00 p.m. game at Virginia Union. The team will close out the weekend with a 1:00 p.m. game against Bowie State.
