RICHMOND, VA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (12-10, 6-0 CIAA) kept on rolling when the team took a 9-0 win over the Virginia Union Lady Panthers (1-1, 1-1 CIAA), Saturday afternoon at the VUU Softball Field. The Lady Rams took the win behind a dominating pitching performance by senior Brittany Lane, who allowed just one hit in the game. The effort brought Lane just one hit shy of the third perfect game of her career.
The Lady Rams matched her efforts with some impressive hitting. As a team, the Lady Rams totaled six hits and took advantage of a pair of VUU errors to take home the win. WSSU senior outfielder Shantel Haskins led the way with a two-for-two effort at the plate with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Lane also added a double of her own.
The Lady Rams scored in every inning of the game, beginning with a pair of first inning runs, scored on an RBI single by senior Nikki Lynch, followed by an RBI sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Andreya O'Brien. The team scored three second inning runs with an RBI groundout by sophomore Monet Daly that was followed by a VUU fielding error that allowed a Haskins score. Another VUU fielding error added the third WSSU score of the inning.
The Lady Rams added third inning score when Lane hit an RBI double to right field. The team rounded out the scoring in the fourth inning when O'Brien hit a two-RBI double down the left field line, followed by a Haskins RBI single to second base.
Lane (6-6) took the pitching win with just one hit allowed, eight strikeouts, and no walks.
The Lady Rams will close out the CIAA Cluster when the team takes on Bowie State Lady Bulldogs, tomorrow. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
