RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (25-14, 14-0 CIAA) held off a talented Shaw Lady Bears (13-20, 8-8 CIAA) for a 6-2 win and extended their conference winning streak to 14 games, Sunday afternoon at the Walnut Creek Complex in Raleigh, N.C. After allowing a pair of early runs to the Lady Bears, the Lady Rams clamped down on defense to roll to the 6-2 victory.
The Lady Rams took the win behind a solid offensive effort as the team recorded 10 hits in the game. Sophomore second baseman Monet Daly led the way with a three-for-four effort at the plate with a run scored. Junior shortstop Tanaya Pettus added a one-for-four effort with a run scored and two RBI.
After allowing a first inning run to the Lady Bears, the Lady Rams answered in the second inning with three runs scored. Senior infielder Britney Cato got things started with an RBI groundout, followed by senior outfielder Andreya O'Brien stealing home. Senior pitcher Britney Lane helped her own cause when she hit an RBI groundout to leave the Lady Rams ahead 3-1.
The Lady Rams allowed another Shaw run in the bottom of the third inning to stay on top, 3-2. It was then that the Lady Rams turned up their defense when the team held the Lady Bears scoreless for the remainder of the game. The team added three more fifth-inning runs to seal the win with a two-RBI groundout by Pettus and an RBI sacrifice fly by O'Brien.
WSSU's Lane took the pitching win, going all seven innings with seven hits allowed and two earned runs. She also recorded eight strikeouts in the game.
