Rams Offense Struggles in Loss to UNC Pembroke

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-24) could not quite get their offense in gear when the team took a tough 6-1 loss to the UNC Pembroke Braves (21-23), Sunday afternoon. The Rams were able a manufacture a run despite some offensive struggles at the plate.

As a team, the hits were hard to come by for the Rams. The Rams totaled three hits in the game with freshman shortstop Daijah Chambers going one-for-three with a run scored while senior second base Chyna Riley and senior centerfielder Anna Marino were also both one-for-three. The Rams failed to record an extra-base hit in the tough loss.

Though the team struggled offensively, the Rams played some solid defense for much of the game despite some rough spots. After playing to a 0-0 tie through the first three innings of the game, the Rams allowed three fourth-inning runs, including a pair of home runs. The team allowed one more fifth inning run to fall behind 4-0. The Rams were able to answer with a Chambers scored following a failed pick-off attempt by the Braves. The Rams allowed two more UNCP scores in the seventh inning to seal the 6-1 loss.

Senior Mercedes Hargett (5-15) took the pitching loss, starting the game and going 3.1 innings before fellow senior Chyna Riley came in for 3.2 innings. Hargett allowed three runs (three earned) on three hits allowed. She also recorded two strikeouts and just one walk allowed. Riley finished the game with three runs allowed (three earned) with a strikeout and two walks allowed.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 7-24 overall. The team would go on to complete the doubleheader in game two.
