WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (13-29, ) needed just two innings to score 11 runs and honored its seniors in style with an 11-0 five-inning win over the Shaw Lady Bears (6-29, 4-11 CIAA), Thursday evening. The Rams took the win behind a stellar offensive effort as they scored a combined 11 runs in just two innings of play.
The Rams took the win behind a great effort at the plate. As a team, the Rams totaled nine hits in the victory. WSSU freshman second base Daijah Chambers led the way, going two-for-three at the plate with two home runs and four RBI. Senior third base Rebecca Demko added a two-for-three effort with a double and two RBI. Senior first base Mercedes Hargett and sophomore outfielder Destiny Snipes both added home runs in the game as well. Snipes finished the game with three RBI while Hargett recorded two.
It took a while for the Rams to get started as the team was held scoreless for the opening inning, but wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in the second inning. It was Snipes who got things started with a three-run homer, followed by a Chambers solo home run to leave the team on top, 4-0 after the second inning. It was in the third inning when the Rams broke out for seven runs. Chambers sparked the effort with a three-run homer, followed by a two-RBI double from Demko, who scored senior pitcher Chyna Riley and sophomore second base Jasmine Holloman. Hargett added a two-run home run to cap the scoring and left the Rams on top, 11-0 after the third inning. The Rams wouldn't score in the fourth inning, but the team clamped down on defense to hold the Lady Bears scoreless and sealed the 11-0 victory.
WSSU senior Chyna Riley (4-6) took the pitching win, going all five innings with no runs allowed on just three hits. She also added four strikeouts.
With the win, the Rams complete the doubleheader sweep and move into a third place tie in the CIAA Southern Division at 6-4 along with Johnson C. Smith. The effort is enough for the Rams to clinch a spot in next week's CIAA Softball Championship. Overall, the Rams are 9-6 in CIAA play.
