Seventh Inning Rally Lifts the Rams in 10-5 Win Over Saint Augustine's

PETERSBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (16-30) broke out for a seventh-inning rally to claim a 10-5 win over the Saint Augustine's Falcons (16-14) in the elimination round of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship Tournament. The Rams scored seven runs in the final inning of the game to secure the victory and remained in contention to defend their conference championship.

The 10 runs were the most that the team scored in the tournament and marked a breakout performance for the team. The Rams totaled 15 hits in the game with senior pitcher Mercedes Hargett led the way for the Rams with a three-for-three effort at the plate with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI. She also had a walk. Junior first base Anna Marino added a three-for-four effort with two RBI, a triple, and a run scored.

The Rams and the Falcons combined for a high-scoring affair. It was the Falcons who struck first with a second-inning run, but the Rams soon answered in the third inning when Hargett two-run homer to put the Rams on top, 2-1. SAU answered with a pair of third inning runs to leave the Rams trailing, 3-2. It was in the sixth inning that the Rams answered with a sixth inning run when freshman second base Daijah Chambers hit an RBI triple that scored sophomore outfielder Destiny Snipes and tied the game, 3-3. It was in the seventh inning when the Rams broke out and put the game out of reach. Sophomore short stop Jasmine Holloman and senior third base Rebecca Demko both scored on SAU fielding errors. Sophomore outfielder Destiny Snipes added a two-RBI single that scored Hargett and junior outfielder Tiarra Delaney. Marino added a two-RBI triple that scored Snipes and sophomore pinch runner Melissa Carillo before scoring on a wild pitch and leaving the Rams with a 10-3 lead. The Rams then turned to their defense to close out the game, only allowing two Falcon runs and sealed the 10-5 victory.

Hargett (12-20) took the pitching victory, allowing just five runs (three earned) and adding three strikeouts.
