CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-22, 5-5 CIAA) gave a solid effort, but the team could not quite come back when the team took a 13-9 road loss to the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (7-15, 5-7 CIAA). The game was a high-scoring affair, but the Rams could not keep up with the hot hitting of the Golden Bulls.
Both teams had big performances at the plate. However, it was the Golden Bulls who turned their hits into runs. As a team, the Rams totaled nine hits in the game while Johnson C. Smith totaled 15 hits. WSSU senior second base Tiara Delaney led the way for the Rams with a three-for-four batting effort with a home run and three RBI. Junior left field Jasmine Holloman was three-for-four with a double, two runs scored and two RBI.
The Rams had a strong opening effort in the game, but the team soon had to rally after an even better start by the Golden Bulls. Things looked good early for the Rams when Holloman hit a two-RBI double. The Rams scored again when sophomore Erica Davis hit an RBI fielder's choice to add another run while another WSSU score came in a JCSU fielding error. The effort left the Rams with a 5-0 lead after the first inning. Things then got tough for the Rams with Johnson C. Smith scoring a pair of first inning runs, four second inning runs, and five third inning runs to leave WSSU trailing, 11-5. The Rams didn't score again until the fifth inning when Delaney hit a two-run home run to leave the Rams trailing, 11-7. Sophomore pitcher Erica Davis added a two-RBI single in the sixth inning to pull the Rams to within two runs, 11-9. However, the team allowed two more JCSU runs to take the 13-9 loss.
Freshman Tia Robinson (1-8) took the pitching loss. She started the game and went two innings with eight runs allowed (seven earned) on eight hits. She recorded three strikeouts. Davis came in to pitch for four innings and finished with five runs allowed (five earned) on seven hits with a strikeout.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 7-22 and 5-5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team will return to action next Saturday when the team heads to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the Saint Augustine's Falcons.
