RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (9-24, 7-7 CIAA) had an offensive showcase when the team took a 13-1 win over the Shaw Lady Bears (10-18, 8-8 CIAA), Sunday afternoon. The team scored 13 runs in the win, tying the team's third best scoring output of the season.
The Rams took the win behind a stellar performance at the plate. The team totaled 18 hits in the game and turned them into 13 runs. WSSU junior leftfielder Jasmine Holloman led the way with a three-for-four batting effort with a triple, a run scored, and four RBI. Sophomore pitcher Erica Davis added a three-for-three batting effort with two RBI and a run scored. Senior outfielder Anna Marino added a two-for-three batting performance with two RBI and a run scored.
The WSSU runs came in three huge innings that were combined with some tremendous defense. The Rams got things started in the second inning when the team plated six runs. Junior Destiny Snipes hit and RBI sacrifice fly while a Shaw fielding effort allowed another WSSU score while Davis added an RBI triple. Holloman also added an RBI groundout that left the team on top, 6-0. After allowing a second inning run to the Lady Bears, the Rams got back on track in the fourth inning when the team added six more runs. Holloman did the bulk of the damage when she hit a three-RBI triple. The Rams rounded out the scoring when Davis hit an RBi single to leave the Rams with the 13-1 victory.
Davis (7-12) took the pitching win. She pitched all five innings with one run allowed (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.
With the win, the Rams improve to 9-24 and 8-7 in CIAA play. The team will return to action tomorrow morning when the team hosts the Livingstone Blue Bears in a 10:00 a.m. Senior Day doubleheader.
