CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (7-8, 6-4 CIAA) played one of their best matches when they needed it as they battled their way to a 6-3 road win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (5-13, 5-6 CIAA), Tuesday afternoon at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts in Charlotte, N.C. The win was a critical one as the teams near the finish of the regular season and both teams playing to gain position in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
The Rams took control of the match early, but the team had to work for it in doubles play. The team claimed a 2-1 lead in doubles play after junior Alexus Morgan and sophomore China Brown combined for an 8-4 win at #2 doubles while senior Gabrielle Lindsay and junior Aja Grant combined for an 8-5 win at #1 doubles. The team took an 8-3 win at #3 doubles to head into singles play with a 2-1 lead.
The work was not done as the Rams needed at least three singles wins to complete the key win. The Rams overdid it and claimed four singles victories to take the 6-3 victory. It was Morgan who got things started with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #2 singles while Brown added a 6-1, 6-4 win at #4 singles. Grant and junior Zakia Spencer both claimed key 6-4, 7-5 wins at #3 and #5 singles before Lindsay rounded out the win with a 6-3, retired win at #1 singles.
With the win, the Rams improve to 7-9 overall and 6-4 in CIAA play. More importantly, the Rams improve to 4-2 in the CIAA Southern Division and gain a tighter grip on second place in the division. The Rams will return to action, Thursday when the team hits the road again to take on the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears.
