WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (10-9) clicked on all cylinders when the team took an 8-1 win over the local rival Salem Spirits (6-15), Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Rams close the 2017 regular season with their fourth straight victory.
The Rams opened the day on a roll when they took six straight singles wins to open the match. Junior Zakia Spencer kicked things off with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 singles. Junior Aja Grant followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #3 singles while sophomore China Brown added a 6-1, 6-1 win of her own at #4 singles. Freshman Cylah Gaither added a 6-0, 6-2 win at #6 singles while senior Gabrielle Lindsay added a 6-2, 6-1 win at #1 singles. Junior Alexus Morgan rounded out the scoring when she closed singles play with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 win at #2 singles to give the Rams a 6-0 lead heading into doubles play.
With the match firmly in control, the Rams dominated doubles play to end the day. The team took 8-0 wins at both #1 and #2 doubles as Lindsay and Grant combined for the #1 win while Morgan and Brown combined for the #2 doubles win. The Rams ended the day with an 8-9 (2-7) loss at #3 doubles to complete the 8-1 victory.
With the win, the Rams close the regular season with a 10-9 overall record. The team will turn its attention to the opening round of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Championship, Thursday.
