Rams in First Place After Day One of CIAA Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams women's indoor track & field team got off to a hot start on the opening day of the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship, Sunday. The Rams totaled 38 points on the opening day of the two-day event.

With only a few field events taking place on the first day of the meet, the Rams did most of their damage on the track to take the lead at the meet. The Rams set the stage with a dominating effort in the women's mile run. The freshman duo of Zakyrah Haynie and Imani Travis that did the damage. Haynie won the event with a 5:26.67 in the event while Travis placed second with a 5:30.66. The Rams also placed second in the women's distance medley relay with a 13:30.09 in the event.

The women's long jump was the sole field event to take place, Sunday. WSSU sophomore Bria Mercer placed third in the event with an 18'7.25" (5.50m) leap.

In addition to the team's early scoring, the Rams also had several qualifiers for event finals tomorrow, including sending four finalists in the women's 60m dash and three in the women's 200m dash. Haynie also qualified for the finals of the women's 800m run as well.

The Rams will complete the two-day meet tomorrow when the team returns to the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. Admission to the meet is free with events set to begin at 9:00 a.m. and going until 4:20 p.m.
