WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams had one of their best performances of the season when the team placed second at the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Rams totaled 154 points to place second behind the champion Saint Augustine's Falcons, Monday evening.
The Rams put on some stellar performances at the meet. The team put on a dominating performance in the sprint events, including dominating the women's 60m dash. The Rams took all four of the top spots in the event with sophomore Kayla Foy winning the event with a 7.44, an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying time to win the event. Freshman Qizeah Jackson placed second with a 7.59, an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time. Freshman Imani Williams placed third with a 7.81 while sophomore Cierra Thompson placed fourth with a 7.84. The Rams weren't done with Jackson and Foy placing in the top three in the women's 200m dash. Jackson won the event with a 24.37 while Foy placed third with a 24.57. Both times were NCAA Division II provisional qualifying times. The Rams also saw some great performances in the distance events. Freshman Zakyrah Haynie led the way, winning the women's 800m run with a 2:19.37 and the women's mile run with a 5:26.67. The Rams also took a pair of top three finishes in the women's 3000m run. Freshman Imani Travis won the event with an 11:19.55 while Haynie placed third with an 11:40.14. For her great performances, Haynie was named the CIAA Running Events MVP.
The Rams also had some solid field events performances as well. Freshman Bria Mercer placed second in the women's triple jump with an 11.77m leap. She also placed third in the women's long jump with a 5.50m leap. Jackson placed third in the women's high jump. She tied sophomore Mikel Franklin when they both recorded 1.58m jumps. Senior Lyssa Wallace-O'Neal placed third in the women's shot put with a 13.33m throw.
