HAMPTON, VA – The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams (11-23) advanced to the semifinal round of the 2012 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championship Tournament after taking a four-set win over the Virginia Union Lady Panthers (5-28), Friday evening at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, Virginia. With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 2-1 in pool play at the tournament and will enter the semifinal round of the tournament as the second seed from Pool B.
After taking a 25-23 loss in the opening set of the match, the Lady Rams took control of the match and never looked back, winning the final three sets, 25-20, 25-14, and 25-20 to end the season for the Lady Panthers and to stay alive in the tournament.
The Lady Rams utilized a potent offensive attack, combined with some timely Virginia Union errors to take the win and advance to the single-elimination round of the tournament. As a team, the Lady Rams totaled 41 kills in the match and took advantage of 29 attack errors by the Lady Panthers. WSSU senior middle blocker De Ann Smith led the way for the Lady Rams with 13 kills in the match. Junior outside hitter Avoni Seymour added eight kills as well.
With the 2-1 record, the Lady Rams will advance to the semifinal round of the tournament tomorrow when they take on the top seed from Pool A, the Chowan Hawks in a 5:00 p.m. match.
