Lady Rams Advance to CIAA Tournament Semifinals with Four-Set Win Over Chowan

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (17-11) punched their ticket to the semifinal round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Tournament when the team took a four-set win over the Chowan Hawks (17-8), Sunday afternoon at Whitaker Gymnasium on the campus of Winston-Salem State University. The Lady Rams took the win behind a great overall performance that saw the team take the win, 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, and 25-13.


The Lady Rams took the win over the Hawks in a battle of powerful offensive teams as the squads combined for 88 kills in the match. The Lady Rams finished the match with 46 total kills, including a team-high 20 kills by sophomore right side hitter Olivia Owens. Senior outside hitter Katelin Wensley added 10 kills as well. Fellow senior outside hitter Avoni Seymour added nine kills in the match. Senior libero Katelyn Sigala led the WSSU defense with 19 digs in the match.


The Lady Rams took control of the match early with a 14-5 lead over the Hawks in the opening set. The Hawks would make a stand, however, as they cut the WSSU lead down to three points 21-18, but the Lady Rams would not relent as the team held the Hawks at bay and finished the set when a Wensley kill gave WSSU the 25-21 opening set win.


In the second set, the Lady Rams once again came out strong with an early 9-3 run. However, Chowan answered with 15-3 lead that left the Lady Rams trailing 18-12. From there, the Hawks went on to the set win as the Lady Rams managed just six more points with the Hawks taking the 25-18 set win.


With the match tied at one set each, both teams came out strong, battling to an 11-11 tie. It was there that the Lady Rams made their stand, mounting a 5-1 run to jump ahead 16-12. Once in control of the set, the Lady Rams held the Hawks at bay to take the 25-21 win. In the fourth set, the Lady Rams took control early and never looked back and rolled to the 25-21 win in the match.


With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 17-11 and advance to the semifinal single elimination round of the 2013 CIAA Volleyball Championship Tournament. The team will take the court, Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the C.E. Gaines Center on the campus of Winston-Salem State University.
