Rams Take a Four-Set Win Over Francis Marion at Queens (N.C.) Fall Invitational

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-2) got their first win of the season when the team made some clutch plays to claim a four-set win over the Francis Marion Patriots (0-3) on the second day of the Queens  (N.C.) Fall Invitational. The Rams controlled much of the match, taking the opening set, 25-19, dropping the second set, 17-25, and claiming back-to-back wins in sets three and four, 26-24 and 25-23.

As a team, the Rams gave a great overall effort to claim the match victory. The Rams totaled 42 kills with 51 digs in the win. WSSU senior outside hitter Jasmine Smith led the way with 14 kills in the match while senior outside hitter Sydney Holland added 12 kills and junior outside hitter Mia Herrod added 10 kills. Senior setter Mya Snow recorded 33 assists while sophomore libero Makala Lytton added 14 digs to lead the Rams.

The Rams controlled the entire opening set of the match. After starting the match with a 12-6 lead, the Rams held off a late rally by the Patriots that cut the WSSU lead down to four points, 22-18, but the Rams would prevail with a 3-1 run to claim the win. The second set turned out to be a struggle for the Rams as the team trailed late 13-19. The team made an effort at a rally, they could not quite get back into things, taking the 17-25 loss.

There would be not letdowns for the Rams in the final two sets of the match. The Rams opened the set with three unanswered points and held their lead after a rally by the Patriots cut the WSSU lead down to one point, 7-6. The Rams would not relent, however as they pushed their lead back to five points, 15-10. A late rally by the Patriots left the two teams tied 24-24, but the Rams closed out the set when they scored back-to-back points to claim the 26-24 set win. The final set saw another clutch performance by the Rams as the team once again opened with a lead before a Francis Marion run left the Rams trailing, 13-14. It was late in the set when the Rams rallied to claim the win. After playing to a 23-23 tie, the Rams benefited from a Francis Marion attack error and a kill by Smith that sealed the win.

With the win, the Rams improve to 1-2 on the season. The team will return to action later this afternoon when they take on the Wingate Bulldogs. For more information on Rams volleyball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (335) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
