Rams Take Three-Set Loss to Wingate to Close Out Queens (N.C.) Fall Invitational


CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-3) could not quite get their offense in gear when the team took a tough three-set loss to the Wingate Bulldogs (4-0) to close out the Queens (N.C.) Fall Invitational, Saturday afternoon. The Rams fell 17-25, 13-25, and 16-25 in the match.

As a team, the Rams struggled against the Bulldogs. The Rams totaled just 23 kills in the match with 13 attack errors. WSSU senior outside hitter Jasmine Smith led the way for the Rams with six fills in the match while junior middle blocker Christa Brown added five. Senior setter Mya Snow recorded 12 assists while sophomore libero Makala Lytton led the WSSU defense with nine digs.

The first set was the most competitive one for the Rams. After opening the match by allowing the Bulldogs to take a 9-2 lead over the Rams, the team was able to battle back, cutting their deficit down to three points, 14-17. However, the Rams would not get any closer as Wingate pulled way for the win.

The second set saw the Rams' struggles continue. The Rams had a better start to the set, holding the Bulldogs within three points, trailing 4-7. However, the Rams allowed an 8-2 run by the Bulldogs to fall behind, 8-20. Though the Rams would match the Bulldogs with five points each, the Rams ended the set with the 13-25 loss.

The Rams were able to stage a more competitive effort in the third set, but in the end, the team could not get past the Bulldogs. For the third straight set, the Rams allowed a strong start to the Bulldogs, falling behind 2-10. The Rams were able to cut their deficit down to as few as four points, 15-19. However, the team would get no closer, taking the 16-25 set loss.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-3 to start the season. The Rams will return to action, Friday evening when the team hosts the Catawba Indians in their home opener.
