Rams Close CIAA Round Up with Three-Set Win Over Bowie State

LINCOLN, PA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (4-9, 3-0 CIAA) closed out the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Round Up in style when the team took a three-set win over the Bowie State Bulldogs (1-3, 0-3 CIAA), Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Rams open CIAA play with a perfect 3-0 record over the weekend.

The Rams took the win behind one of their best performances of the season. As a team, the Rams totaled 31 kills with just four attack errors. The team also had a great defensive effort, holding the Bulldogs to just 13 kills in the match. WSSU sophomore Danyale Barry led the way for the team with eight kills while junior Ytae Cobb added seven kills and sophomore Alexis Gregson-Hammond added six kills. Cobb also added four service aces. WSSU sophomore setter Brittany Carpenter coordinated the WSSU attack with 16 assists.

The opening set showed the Rams' dominance right away as the team controlled the set from the very beginning. The Rams opened the set with a 17-9 lead before fully taking control with an 8-2 run to take the 25-13 opening set win.

The second set was just as dominating for the Rams. After playing to a 4-4 tie against the Bulldogs, the Rams broke out for a 7-1 run to take an 11-5 lead over the Bulldogs. From there, the Rams remained in control and really pushed ahead when the team went on a 10-1 run to go ahead, 22-8. From there, the Rams cruised to the win after back-to-back Bowie State errors sealed the Rams' win.

The third set was the most dominant one for the Rams as the team allowed just seven points to the Bulldogs. After taking a 7-4 lead, the Rams outscored the Bulldogs 18-3, including scoring six straight points to seal the match victory.

With the win, the Rams improve to 4-9 overall and 3-0 in CIAA play. The team will return to action, Thursday when the head to Fayetteville, N.C. to open CIAA Southern Division play against the Broncos.
