WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (5-10, 4-0 CIAA) remained undefeated in conference play when the team took a five set win over the Chowan Hawks (2-6, 2-3 CIAA), Friday evening. After taking a 1-2 deficit, the Rams bounced back for back-to-back wins in the final two sets to claim the 21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, and 15-12 victory.
The Rams had to battle to claim the win as they needed an overall solid team effort to claim the win. As a team, the Rams totaled 47 kills in the match, but committed 26 errors along the way. The team also had a solid defensive effort with 54 digs. WSSU junior outside hitter Ytae Cobb led the way with 17 kills for the Rams while sophomore middle hitter Danyale Berry added eight kills. Defensively, freshman Gabrielle Azar added 21 digs as well. Redshirt-freshman middle blocker Gabrielle Greene added four total blocks (two solo) as well.
The first two sets saw a pair of opposite performances from the Rams. After getting off to a slow start to open the match, the Rams allowed some critical late scores by the Hawks to take the 21-25 set loss. However, the second set saw a different performance with the Rams going on the late rally that included five straight points with back-to-back kills from Cobb and junior Hailey Tatu.
The next two sets saw the momentum swing from one side of the court to the other throughout the two sets. The Rams got the third set started in a major way with six unanswered points, but the team soon fell behind, allowing four straight points to the Hawks that tied the set, 12-12. From there, the two teams played to an 18-18 tie. From there, Chowan controlled the remainder of the set, taking the 25-21 win. However, the fourth set belonged to the Rams. After playing to an 8-8 tie, the Rams went ahead to claim a 15-10 lead. The Rams pushed their lead to as many as seven points, 21-14 after a service ace from freshman Azar. From there, the Rams cruised to a 25-21 set victory and set the match into a fifth and final set.
The final set was a thrilling one with the two teams playing to a 7-7 tie. The Rams went ahead 11-9 to give themselves a cushion. The Rams took a 14-11 lead after a Berry kill. After a Chowan service error put the Rams within match point, a Greene kill ended the match and sealed the WSSU win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 5-10 overall and 4-0 in CIAA play. The team will return to action, tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. when the team takes on the Elizabeth City State Vikings.
