DeValdean Penn has been a valued member of the Winston-Salem State University athletic family for nearly 40 years.  His work with WSSU athletics began in 1970 when he served numerous positions including acting as a team manager/trainer/equipment manager for nearly every sport on the WSSU campus. Even after graduating from Winston-Salem State in 1974, he continued to assist the WSSU athletics program in numerous capacities including acting as a special assistant to WSSU football and the official scorekeeper for the men’s basketball team. He has not missed a football game with the Rams in over a decade and has been the men’s basketball official scorekeeper for the better part of a quarter-century. Mr. Penn was a school teacher in the Forsyth County School System where he spent 31 years as an educator. During his career, he earned “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” honors and a Community Service Award from the WS/FC School System and the Winston-Salem Chronicle in 1999. He is a Life Member of the WSSU National Alumni Association and a Life Member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
