Elgon Bailey is inducted into the WSSU C.E. “Big House” Gaines Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding track and field achievements. While a member of the mile relay team in 1952 Bailey was instrumental in WSSU’s championship victory at the prestigious Penn Relays. Selected team captain (1954-1955), Bailey was a member of the WSSU mile relay team that was undefeated in collegiate competition for three consecutive years. In 1952 the team won the mile relay championship at the Penn Relays. After graduation from WSSU in 1955, Bailey taught for 24 years in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for six year and has earned three masters degrees in various disciplines within the field of education.
