Joseph Nichols is inducted into the WSSU C.E. “Big House” Gaines Athletic Hall of Fame for his stellar career as a member of the Rams’ basketball team. A graduate of East Forsyth High School, Nichols played for legendary coach Clarence “Big House” Gaines. Nichols led the Rams in scoring in 1949 and was selected to the All-Tournament team of the Old North Carolina Tournament during the 1950-51 season. His collegiate career was interrupted from 1952-54 when he left WSSU to serve in the United States Army. Upon his return from military service Nichols was a member of not only the basketball team but was an outstanding track and field athlete, excelling in the pole vault. Known as “axe” during his playing days, Nichols graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He would go on to receive a Master of Science degree in Education in Administration from North Carolina A&T State University.
