Mary Garber is inducted into the WSSU C.E. “Big House” Gaines Athletic Hall of Fame for meritorious service. Garber was a sportswriter for the Winston-Salem Journal and the Twin City Sentinel from 1946 through 1997 and as far as can be determined, she was probably the first fulltime woman sportswriter at a daily newspaper in the country, and she certainly had the longest career. She and WSSU legendary coach Clarence “Big House” Gaines became close during Garber’s coverage of WSSU Athletics. It was through the efforts of Gaines and the writing of Garber that helped to put WSSU athletics into the national spotlight.
