Enshrined into the WSSU C.E. “Big House” Gaines Athletic Hall of Fame for men’s basketball, Thomas “Joe” Cunningham was a four-year letterman for the Rams’ basketball team from 1962-66. Chosen by his teammates and coaches as the captain of the 1966 men’s basketball team at WSSU he helped to lead the Rams to the 1966 CIAA Championship en route to All-CIAA honors the same year. A member of two WSSU CIAA Championship basketball teams he was named one of the CIAA’s Top-50 players in history in 1997 for his prowess as a rebounder and shot blocker. Cunningham earned a Bachelor of Science degree from WSSU on May 14, 1978 after playing seven years as a member of the Harlem Globetrotters from 1966-73.
