WSSU Holds Championship Ring Ceremony to Honor Champions

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem State University took the time to honor its 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) champions Saturday afternoon. The members of the Rams 2019 softball team as well as the 2019 Rams Outdoor Track & Field team each received their championship rings for their historic efforts during the 2019 year. In addition to their championship efforts, the Rams recognized their United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American as well as USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree as well.

The 2019 Rams softball team was honored for their dramatic win over the Claflin Panthers to claim the CIAA Softball Championship. After taking an 11-3 loss in the first game of the double elimination tournament, the Rams headed into the seventh inning with a 4-2 lead before allowing a pair of runs to the Panthers to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Rams scored the championship winning run when former Ram Daijah Chambers scored on a sacrifice foul out that gave the Rams the 5-4 win and the CIAA Championship. The 2019 Rams went on to set more school history when the team opened the 2019 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship Tournament with a 3-0 win over the top-seeded West Virginia State Yellowjackets.

The 2019 Rams Outdoor Track & Field Team was also honored after winning the 2019 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The team set some school history of its own as the championship was the first women's outdoor track & field championship in school history as well. The team dominated the women's 100m dash with former Rams senior Cieirra Thompson claiming first place in the event with an 11.89 while Ma'Kyia Gayden added a third place finish at 12.09.  The team also took second and third place in the women's 400m hurdles with junior Amique Willis placing second with a 1:03.29 while senior Victoria Porter added third place with a 1:03.63. The Rams closed the meet and claimed the championship when the Rams' 4x400m relay team win their event with a 3:48.58.

The event was capped off by the Rams recognizing a pair of individual honorees. Former Ram Cierra Thompson was honored for earning USTFCCCA All-American honors in 2020 while junior Tamia McLean was honored for her place in the USTFCCCA All-Academic team.
