FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The expectations will be high for the Winston-Salem State Rams who will open the 2018 season tomorrow. The Rams were ranked second among small schools in the 2018 Black College Nines Preseason polls. In addition to the team honor, the Rams also earned a pair of individual honors as senior outfielder Brandon Ford and junior outfielder Randy Norris were both named to the 2018 Black College Nines HBCU Pre-Season All-Elite Team.
Last season, the Rams had an historic season. The team posted a 39-19 overall record and claimed its sixth Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship in the last seven seasons. The team went on for an historic run in the 2017 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament where the team reach the tournament finals, falling to the West Chester Golden Rams, 12-7 with a trip to the 2017 NCAA Division II World Series on the line.
Norris and Ford earned the preseason honors after a pair of great efforts in 2017. Both players earned spots in the 2017 All-CIAA team with Ford hitting .333 for the Rams and finished the season ranked second in the nation with 10 triples. Norris led the Rams with 47 stolen bases last season to set a new school record and led the nation. For his efforts, Norris was also selected for the 2017 NCAA Division II Atlantic All-Region team.
