WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (15-9) broke out their offense when the team took an impressive 19-9 win over the Jefferson (Philadelphia + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (3-10), Tuesday evening. The Rams had to put on an offensive showcase to keep up with a hard-hitting Jefferson squad.
As a team, the Rams had one of their best offensive games of the season. The Rams totaled 15 hits in the game, one more than their opponents. The Rams scored in six of the eight innings that the team batted in. WSSU senior John Garcia led the way for the Rams when he went three-for-five at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI. Junior second base Nick Williams added a three-for-four with a double, three runs scored, and an RBI. Junior centerfielder Randy Norris also had a big day on the bases with four steals on the day.
The Rams scored early an often with runs scored in the first, second, third, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. The team got things started with three first inning runs. Sophomore Cole Parks started things off with a fielder's choice that forced a Jefferson throwing error to score Garcia. It was followed by an RBI sacrifice fly from freshman shortstop Wellington Guzman that scored senior outfielder Brandon Ford. The effort was followed by Norris scoring after a steal from Cole. The effort left the Rams on top, 3-0. After allowing a pair of second inning runs to Jefferson, the Rams added three more second inning runs. Garcia got things started with a two-RBI double which was followed by a Norris RBI single as well. The effort left the Rams on top, 6-2. The Rams allowed two more Jefferson runs before scoring four third inning runs. Senior right fielder Brandon Ford got things started with an RBI sacrifice fly to score senior Randal Ortiz. Norris added an RBI single to score senior Emilio Abreu. Sophomore catcher Cole Parks added a two-RBI double as well to leave the Rams on top, 10-4. After allowing three more runs to Jefferson to go ahead, 10-4, the Rams broke out for eight unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull away 19-7 heading into the ninth inning. The Rams allowed two ninth inning runs, but no more to pull out the 19-9 win.
WSSU junior Josh Larson (4-1) took the pitching win. He got the start and went two innings with two runs allowed, two earned, on just four hits allowed. Junior Tomas Goco also came in and went for two innings with no runs allowed on just one hit.
