WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (16-9) staged a late rally, but the effort was not quite enough when the team took a 12-6 loss to the UNC Pembroke Braves (16-5), Friday evening. The Rams took the loss in spite of a great offensive effort, but the team could not keep up with the hard-hitting Braves.
As a team, the Rams had a solid hitting effort. The team totaled seven hits in the game. Senior first base Randal Ortiz led the way for the Rams with a two-for-two batting effort with two RBI, and a run scored. Freshman short stop Wellington Guzman added a home run as well.
The Rams struggled early in the game, but the team bounced back late. However, the effort was not quite enough as the team took the tough loss. The Rams allowed three first inning runs to the Braves, followed by a pair of second-inning runs to fall behind 5-0 before the team bounced back with a an RBI single by Ortiz that scored senior Emilio Abreu. After allowing two more third inning runs to fall behind 7-1, the Rams got back into their scoring ways when sophomore pitcher Cole Parks hit an RBI single to score junior Rashad Stewart and left the Rams to within five runs, 7-2. A four-run fourth inning left the Rams trailing, 11-2, but the Rams answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ortiz got things started with an RBI double followed by a two-run home run from Guzman. The effort left the Rams trailing, 11-6. After allowing one more fifth inning run to the Braves, the Rams turned on their defense, holding the Braves scoreless for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, the Rams would never get back on the scoring train as the team finished the game with the 12-6 loss.
Sophomore pitcher Cole Parks (2-1) took the pitching loss, going 1.1 innings. He finished the game with five runs allowed, five earned.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 16-9. The team will hit the road for their next action when the team heads to Pembroke, N.C. to close out the weekend series against the Braves.
