Rams Break Out for 14-3 Win Over Bluefield State
MARION, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (21-14) found a hitting grove and stuck with it when the team took an impressive 14-3 win over the Bluefield State Blues (12-14), Sunday afternoon. The Rams took the win behind a great hitting performance in the win.
As a team, the Rams recorded 14 hits in the win and turned them into 14 runs. WSSU junior outfielder Randy Norris went three-for-four at the plate to lead the way for the Rams. Senior first base Emilio Abreu went three-for-four as well with a home run, his second of the day. He also recorded four RBI in the game.
The Rams found themselves in a battle early, but the team had an offensive breakout to roll their way to the win. After allowing a pair of first inning runs to the Blues, the Rams responded for three first inning runs of their own and never looked back. After a second inning run, the Rams broke things open in the third inning when the team scored five runs to take a 9-3 lead over the Blues. The inning included a solo homer from Abreu. From there, the team clamped down on defense to hold the Blues without another score while adding four more runs.
WSSU redshirt-freshman Jalen Scott (3-4) took the pitching win. He started the game and went two innings. He finished the game with two runs allowed (one earned) on three hits. He also added three strikeouts. Senior Landon Biggs got the longest action of the day with three innings. He had one run allowed (one earned) with two strikeouts.
With the win, the Rams improve to 21-14 and take three of the four games in the weekend series. The Rams will return to action, Wednesday, when the team heads to Athens, West Virginia to take on the Concord (W.Va.) Mountain Lions.
