Rams Stage Seventh-Inning Rally for 5-4 Win at Virginia State

ETTRICK, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (28-16) used a late rally to secure a 5-4 road win over the Virginia State Trojans (25-15-1), Saturday afternoon. After heading into the seventh and final inning trailing, 4-2, the Rams scored three clutch runs to take the lead and then sealed the victory with some stellar defense.

The Rams claimed the hard-fought victory behind some great overall play on both offense and defense. The two teams combined for just 11 hits in the game with the Rams totaling just five runs. WSSU junior centerfielder Rashad Stewart led the way when he went one-for-one at the plate with the winning run scored and two crucial RBI. Junior second base Nick Williams went one for three at the plate with a double.

The early portion of the game belonged to the Rams, but soon the Trojans came back and set the stage for the dramatic WSSU ending to the game. WSSU junior centerfielder Randy Norris got things started when he took advantage of a VSU fielding error to claim the first run of the game. The Rams added another run when sophomore Cole Parks hit into an RBI double play to score senior designated hitter John Garcia. The effort left the Rams ahead, 2-0 after the first inning. The Rams allowed a fourth inning run to the Trojans along with three fifth inning runs to trail the Trojans, 4-2. 

The seventh inning was when the Rams staged their dramatic rally. It began when Stewart hit a two-RBI triple to tie the game, 4-4. It was Garcia would then hit was turned out to be the game-winning run. Defensively, the Rams shut out the Trojans with freshman Tomas Goco recording a pair of strikeouts and drawing a VSU flyout to end the game.

WSSU senior Seth Reeves (5-3) was credited with the pitching win. He started the game and went 4.2 innings. He finished the game with four runs allowed (four earned) on six hits. He added five strikeouts with just two walks.
