Rams Hold Off Late Limestone Rally for 7-4 Win

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (3-0) completed their weekend series sweep when the team took a 7-4 win over the Limestone Saints (2-6), Sunday afternoon. The Rams had an early breakout and then held on for the victory.

The Rams took the win behind some great play both at the plate and in the field. As a team, the Rams totaled eight hits in the game and plated seven runs in the game. WSSU senior second base Nick Williams led the way for the Rams with a three-for-four batting effort with a double, three runs scored, and an RBI. He was the only Ram with multiple hits in the game.

The game was a close one early. Limestone struck with two first inning runs before the Rams answered with a first inning run of their own when senior outfielder Hunter Phillips hit an RBI single to score Williams and cut the WSSU deficit in half. The Rams tied the game in the third inning when a Limestone passed ball allowed the Rams to tie the game, 2-2 in the third inning. Junior catcher Shannon Glover hit an RBI double to give the Rams a go ahead run in the sixth inning. The Rams added another seventh inning run when sophomore first base Luke Spiva hit an RBI double to drive in Williams in the seventh inning. The Rams added three more eighth inning runs when William hit an RBI double that was followed by another score by the Rams on a Saints fielding error. The performance left the Rams up 7-2 heading into the ninth inning. The Rams allowed two more ninth inning runs to the Saints, but the team would not allow any more runs to the Saints. With the tying run at the plate, the Rams got a game-winning strikeout from senior Tomas Goco.

WSSU junior Parker Strader got the pitching win. He came in for 3.2 innings with two runs allowed (two earned) with three strikeouts. Sophomore Tyrese Hearst started the game and went five innings for the Rams with two runs allowed (two earned). He also added five strikeouts. Goco came in for 0.1 innings and closed the game with a strikeout.

With the win, the Rams improve to 3-0 to open the season. The team will return to action, Tuesday when they host the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinal in a 4:00 p.m. game. For more information on Rams baseball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to
