Rams Score Big in 18-1 Win Over Davis & Elkins
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (8-0) continued their winning streak when the team took an 18-1 win over the Davis & Elkins Senators (0-3), Sunday afternoon. In a game that saw an early start cancelled out by a 45-minute rain delay, the Rams got back on track to claim their largest win thus far this season.
The Rams took the win behind by a great effort both at the plate and in the field. However, the team didn't need a lot of hits to get the win. The Rams needed just 10 hits to claim the 18 runs in the win. The Rams also benefitted from four Senator fielding errors. WSSU sophomore Wellington Guzman had the biggest performance of the day with six RBI in the game. Freshman Nick Ward added a two-for-three batting performance with a double, three runs scored, and an RBI.
The Rams scored five first inning runs, followed by a pair of third inning runs, seven fourth inning runs, three fifth inning runs, and a sixth inning run to claim the win. The biggest hit of the game came from Buzman who recorded a fourth inning grand slam in the win.
WSSU freshman Avery Cain (1-0) got the pitching win. He started the game and went 3.1 innings before junior Parker Strader came in for 2.2 innings. Cain had three strikeouts with no runs allowed. Strader added four strikeouts with no runs allowed as well.
