Rams Take a 7-4 Loss to Concord

MOCKSVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (21-11) had some impressive batting performances, but it was not enough as the team took a 7-4 loss to the Concord Mountain Lions (12-5), Tuesday evening. In a game that featured four home runs between the two teams, the Rams could not quite get the runs that they needed across the plate in the hard-fought loss.

As a team, the Rams put on a solid hitting performance. The squad totaled eight hits in the game, but only four runs came across the plate in the loss. WSSU redshirt-sophomore centerfielder E.P. Reese led the way for the Rams with a great three-for-four batting effort. He had a home run with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior left fielder Cole Parks added a three-for-four hitting effort of his own. Senior infielder Nick Williams added a home run of his own.

The Rams were able to get their offense going in spots, but they were spread out throughout the game. After allowing a first inning two-run homer to the Mountain Lions, the Rams answered in the bottom of the inning when redshirt-senior designated hitter Hunter Phillips hit an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the WSSU deficit in half, 2-1. The Rams took a lead when Reese hit a two-run home run in the third inning to leave WSSU leading 3-2. The Rams allowed four sixth inning runs to the Mountain Lions to fall behind, 6-4. The Rams would attempt a rally in the sixth inning when Williams hit a solo home run. However, the Rams allowed another homer to the Mountain Lions in the eighth inning that capped the WSSU loss.

WSSU redshirt-sophomore pitcher Jalen Scott (4-3) took the pitching loss. He started the game and he went six innings. He finished the game with six runs (six earned) on nine hits with seven strikeouts. Four more WSSU pitchers came in to finish the game.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 21-11 overall. The team will return to action, Saturday when they host the Virginia State Trojans in a Saturday doubleheader. For more information on Rams baseball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to
