Rams Take a 10-7 Loss at Emmanuel (Ga.)

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (27-13) staged a great comeback, but the team fell short in a 10-7 road loss to the Emmanuel College Lions, Friday afternoon. After falling behind, 8-4, the Rams scored three ninth-inning runs, but fell short in the tough loss.

The Rams carried their usual solid hitting in the game. The team totaled nine hits in the game and benefitted from three Lions fielding errors. Redshirt-sophomore centerfielder E.P. Reese led the way for the Rams, going two-for-four at the plate with a double and a run scored in the game. Senior short stop Nick Williams added a three-run home run as well.

The team spread their scoring throughout the game. The team opened things early when senior pitcher Cole Parks hit an RBI double to open the game in the first inning. The team allowed the Lions to answer in the bottom of the first inning. A Lions passed ball allowed the Rams to go ahead 2-1 in the third inning, but the team allowed a pair of third inning runs to the Lions. The Rams would go ahead once again in the fourth inning when freshman Nick Ward hit a two-RBI single that left the Rams on top, 4-3, in the fourth inning. However, the team allowed a Lions score in the bottom of the inning for the game to stand tied, 4-4. The Rams allowed three fifth inning runs and a sixth inning run while going scoreless to fall behind, 8-4. After allowing a pair of eighth inning runs, WSSU headed into the ninth inning trailing, 10-4. It was then that Williams hit a three-run home run to cut the WSSU deficit down to three runs, 10-7. However, that was all the offense that the Rams would muster in the final inning.

WSSU junior Cole Parks (9-2) took the pitching loss. He started the game and threw 4.1 innings. He finished the game with seven runs allowed (seven earned) on nine hits. He also added four strikeouts. Three more Rams took the mound in the game.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 27-13. The two teams will return to action, tomorrow when the teams play a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader in Franklin Springs, Ga. For more information on Rams baseball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to
