MILWAUKEE, WI -- Winston-Salem State's Wakefield Ellison scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds off the bench to lead the #23 Winston-Salem State University Rams to a 63-57 win over #10 Saint Leo's in the 2012 Fresh Coast Classic (Milwaukee, WI) Championship to win the tournament.
Marcus Wells, named Fresh Coast Classic MVP, scored 12 points, pulled down five rebounds, dished out three assists and had three steal for the Rams (3-2).
WSSU erased a one point half time deficit and outscored Saint Leo 33-26 in the second half for the win. WSSU dominated the points in the paint with a 28-14 advantage, and the Rams bench outscored their opponents 33-20.
For the WSSU Rams, Ellison's 18 and Wells' 12 paced the team. Joseph Thompson also came off the bench to add nine points and seven rebounds, while Justin Glover added eight points, three rebounds, three assists and a game high four steals. Kimani Hunt and Tyre Desmore each chipped in six points, with Hunt also pulling down five rebounds, and Desmore adding three rebounds.
Winston-Salem State will host USC-Aiken at 7:00 pm on Wednesday night in the CE Gaines Center. The Rams will be looking for some revenge, as the Pacers beat the Rams last week, 98-84 in Aiken, SC.
