CHARLESTON, WV - After completing a successful career at Winston-Salem State University, former Rams guard Robert Colon will join forces some of the other top former players from historically black colleges & universities (HBCUs) to compete in The Basketball Tournament. The team, called HBCUnited is comprised of some of the top HBCU professional talent in the nation and they will take part in one of the biggest professional basketball tournaments in the nation.
Colon's debut in The Basketball Tournament will mark a key milestone in his professional career. He will take part in the tournament after being selected by Santeros de Aguada of the National Superior Basketball League. His selection came after a great collegiate career that included him scoring 1,737 total career points to rank seventh in school history. He capped his career by leading the Rams to the 2020 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Basketball Championship. He was named the CIAA Tournament MVP to go along with earning a spot on the 2019-20 CIAA All-Conference team. He was also named the CIAA Rookie of the Year as a true freshman in the 2016-17 season.
The HBCUnited Team is comprised from some of the best former HBCU players in the country. Among his teammates will be Charles Williams, the all-time leading scorer at Howard University and three-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Association (MEAC) All-Conference selection, Tiwian Kindley, a two-time MEAC All-Conference selection from Morgan State University, and fellow Morgan State alum Phillip Carr who is one of just seven 1,000-point scorers in school history and won a Swedish Championship with the Norrkoping Dolphins.
The Basketball Tournament is a 64-team, single elimination tournament for $1 million. The HBCUnited Team will compete in the West Virginia Region. The team will begin play Sunday when they take on Armored Athlete squad at 2:00 p.m. The winning team will advance to the second round of the tournament on Monday. Games from The Basketball Tournament are scheduled for broadcast on ESPN2.
