Rams End Regular Season with a 75-69 Loss at Livingstone

SALISBURY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (15-13, 11-7 CIAA) staged a late comeback, but the team could not overcome some early struggles when they took a 75-69 road loss to the Livingstone Blue Bears (9-19, 6-12 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. Though the Rams were able to overcome a slow start, the team could not quite do enough to pull off the win.

The Rams had a strong shooting effort in the game, but the team's 28 turnovers stalled their scoring output. As a team, the Rams shot 45.0% (27-of-60) from the floor in the game. WSSU senior forward Brionna Pate led the way with a double-double 20 points and 13 rebounds in the game. Freshman guard Amaya Tucker added 12 points while junior forward Laichelle Sparrow added 11 points with six rebounds off the bench.

The first half saw the best and the worst of the Rams in the game. The first quarter was especially tough for the Rams with the team managing just eight points and fell into a 20-8 deficit at the end of the quarter. The Rams were able to bounce back with a better effort in the second quarter, but they got no closer than six points when junior guard Taylor Daniels hit a three-pointer to five give the Rams a 35-29 deficit with 1:28 left in the half. In the final minute, the Rams allowed the Blue Bears to cushion their lead and left the Rams trailing, 37-29.

The second half saw the Rams make a big comeback effort.  The Rams outscored the Blue Bears, 41-23 to tie the score at the end of the quarter. The Rams had a big start to the quarter to cut away at their deficit before a Tucker three-pointer with 3:47 left in the third quarter tied the game and a Sparrow lay-up with 3:07 gave the Rams their first lead of the game. In the final minutes of the quarter, the two teams went back and forth trading the lead before a Sparrow lay-up at the buzzer left the game tied, 50-50 heading into the fourth quarter. The Rams had some great play late in the quarter as a three-point play from sophomore guard Teara Johnson tied the game, 67-67. However, Livingstone made some key plays of their own with some clutch free throw shooting to seal the Rams' loss.

With the loss, the Rams fall to 15-13 overall and 11-7 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team also falls to 8-4 in the CIAA Southern Division and will finish the regular in third place in the division. The Rams will now await the announcement of seeding for the 2019 CIAA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament.
