WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (2-1) put on a great show for the hometown crowd when the team took an 84-51 win over the Converse Valkyries (1-2), Tuesday evening. The Rams broke out for a big second half performance to claim the victory in their first game in the friendly confines of the C.E. Gaines Center.
It was a hot-shooting performance that was paired with some strong defense to claim the Rams. As a team, the Rams shot a scorching hot 45.5% (30-of-66) from the floor in the game. Sophomore guard Amaya Tucker led the way for the Rams with a game-high 33 points against the Valkyries. Fellow sophomore guard Hailey Gipson added a near double-double when she added 12 points with seven rebounds in the game. Junior guard Melody Prichard added 11 points in the game as well.
The Rams controlled the game from the very beginning. The team had to battle through a tough first quarter to establish control, however. The Rams allowed the Valkyries to score the opening basket of the game and that was their only time that the Rams would trail for the rest of the game. The Rams answered with five straight points after a jumper from senior Jahlia Williams. From there, the Rams never looked back. The Rams went ahead by as many as three points, 14-11 after a jumper from junior guard Teara Johnson in the final minute of the quarter before allowing the Valkyries some late scores and held on to a 14-13 lead at the end of the quarter.
It was in the second quarter that the Rams really asserted themselves. After taking a 26-20 lead on the Valkyries near the mid-point of the quarter, the Rams outscored their opponents 11-4 to take a 37-24 halftime lead.
The third quarter was equally impressive for the Rams. After allowing back-to-back scores by the Valkyries, the Rams kicked things into gear with three unanswered lay-ups. It was in the final minutes of the quarter when the Rams pulled away from the Valkyries. The Rams closed the quarter with a 9-2 run that was capped by a Tucker three-point play with our seconds left to play.
The Rams poured it on in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Valkyries 25-15 to close out the game. The Rams saved their best performances for the final minutes when the team closed the game on an 8-2 run to close out the win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 2-1 to open the season and open home court with a win. The Rams will return to action, Friday when the team hosts the Piedmont Triad Bruins in a 4:00 p.m. game.
