WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (6-6, 3-4 CIAA) closed out home court with an impressive performance when the team took a 69-57 win over the Saint Augustine's Falcons (5-6, 1-3 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Rams coupled a great defensive performance with a pair of breakout offensive performances to claim the win and ended a two-game conference skid for the Rams.
The Rams took the win behind one of the best overall performances of the season. The team combined its usual strong defensive effort with some quality offense to claim the win. Defensively, the Rams held the Falcons to shooting just 33.3% (18-of-54) from the floor and they forced 25 turnovers. Offensively, the Rams broke out behind a pair of great individual performances. As a team, the Rams shot 42.4% (25-of-59) from the floor. It was sophomore guard Melody Prichard who stood out for the Rams with a career-high 28 points in the game. Graduate senior Brandi Segars added her second career double-double for the Rams when she scored 12 points with 10 rebounds in the game. She also added steal and a blocked shot in the game.
Though the game was hard-fought from the very beginning, the Rams controlled the game from its very beginning. In the first quarter, the Rams jumped out to an early 17-10 lead after a Segars lay-up with just over two minutes left in the quarter, but the Rams allowed the Falcons to go on a 10-3 run and ended the quarter tied, 20-20.
The second quarter was a tough, defensive outing for the two teams. The two teams combined for just 15 points with the Rams outscoring the Falcons 9-6. The Rams allowed just one field goal to the Falcons during the period and took a 29-26 lead into halftime behind the strong defensive effort.
The third quarter was much different with both teams bringing some strong offensive performances. The Rams scored 20 points during the quarter. Though the Rams allowed the Falcons to claim a 37-35 lead near the mid-point of the quarter, the Rams stormed back in a big way when a lay-up from senior guard Taylor Daniels left the Rams on top, 49-43 just before the final minute of the quarter. The Rams allowed two free throws to the Falcons, but held on for a 49-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
It was in the fourth quarter that the Rams took over the game. They outscored the Falcons, 20-12 to roll to the win. In the final minutes of the game, the Rams outscored the Falcons 9-4 to claim the win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 6-6 overall and 3-4 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team also improves to 1-0 in CIAA Southern Division play. The Rams will break for the Christmas holiday before heading to Aiken, S.C. to take on the USC-Aiken Pacers on New Year's Day.
