Rams Open Home Field with a 17-2 Win Over Elizabeth City State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Rams (3-0) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back when the team opened home field with an impressive 17-2 win over the Elizabeth City State Vikings (0-3), Saturday afternoon. The Rams broke the game open early with 11 first inning runs and went on to claim the win.

As a team, the Rams put on an impressive showing at the plate. The Rams totaled 12 hits in the game and turned them into 17 total runs. The Rams totaled five extra base hits in the game. WSSU senior catcher Alleshia Pullen led the way for the Rams with a three-for-four performance at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, and three runs batted in (RBI). Sophomore outfielder Kameryn Kirby added a three-for-three batting effort with three runs scored and two RBI.

The Rams opened the game on a high note and kept things going from there. After scoring 11 first inning runs, the Rams added three second inning runs. The Rams first crossed the plate when an ECSU throwing error allowed freshman Teanna Davis to score. Kirby followed that effort with an RBI single that drove in sophomore Sequoa Wingfield. Kirby added a stolen base that allowed junior A'Yonna Waddell to score. The effort allowed the Rams to take a 13-0 lead. The Vikings were able to claim a score in the third inning before the Rams added two more of their own third inning scores. Pullen was able to score when freshman Breanna Frye stole second to put the Rams on top, 14-1. Later in the inning, freshman Camarie Patterson hit an RBI single to score Frye and left the Rams on top, 17-1 at the end of the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, ECSU would score on a solo home run, but the effort was not enough as the Rams sealed the win.

WSSU freshman Kara Green took the pitching victory. She started the game and threw all five innings. She finished the game with two runs allowed on four hits. She also finished the game with four strikeouts.

With the win, the Rams improve to 3-0 to open the 2021 season. The two teams would go on to complete the doubleheader later in the day. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to
