Morrison Throws No Hitter to Lead Rams to 8-0 Win Over Elizabeth City State
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Rams (4-0) combined some great hitting with a spectacular pitching performance to claim an 11-0 victory and to complete a second straight doubleheader sweep of the Elizabeth City State Vikings, Saturday. WSSU junior Anastasia Morrison threw a no-hitter with only one walk to lead the Rams to the victory.
Though the WSSU defense was terrific in the win, the Rams added some great offense to claim the win as well. As a team, the Rams totaled 11 hits in the game, including a pair of home runs and a triple. Sophomore infielder Semaj Brown did the most damage for the Rams with a two-for-two batting performance that included a grand slam home run and five runs batted in (RBI). Morrison joined her with a home run of her own. Freshman catcher Teanna Davis added a two-for-two batting effort with an RBI of her own.
Game two of the doubleheader was a hard-fought one as the Rams had to work hard for every run. WSSU opened the game with two first inning runs. It was Brown who got things started when she hit an RBI sacrifice fly that scored senior outfielder Nyla Howard. It was followed by a Morrison solo home run. The Rams added a second inning run when Howard hit an RBI groundout that scored sophomore Sequoa Winfield and left the Rams on top, 3-0. It was in the fourth inning when the Rams really struck it big. With the bases loaded, Brown hit a grand slam home run that left the Rams ahead, 7-0. The Rams were able to put the game away when freshman catcher Teanna Davis hit an RBI single that capped the Rams' scoring and gave the team an 8-0 lead. From there, the Rams went on to seal the 8-0 win with some great defense to hold the Vikings scoreless.
Morrison had a tremendous pitching performance to claim the win. She started the game and held the Vikings without a hit in five innings. She finished the game with nine strikeouts and only one walk.
With the win, the Rams improve to 4-0. The team will return to action on Friday, March26th when the team takes on the Claflin Panthers in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
