Rams Take an 11-1 Loss at Claflin

ORANGEBURG, SC - The Winston-Salem State University Rams (4-1) got a rude welcome when the team returned to action as the team took an 11-1 loss to the Claflin Panthers (5-0), Sunday afternoon. Fielding errors and batting struggles proved costly as the Rams could not find ways to keep up with the Panthers in the tough loss.

As a team, the Rams had their share of struggles both at the plate and in the field. The Rams totaled four hits in the game with sophomore outfielder Kameryn Kirby leading the way. She finished the game with a two-for-three batting effort with a triple. Senior designated player Alleshia Pullen was one-for-two with a triple of her own and a run scored while freshman Breanna Frye added the sole RBI for the Rams. Defensively, the Rams struggled mightily with seven fielding errors and seven unearned runs allowed to the Panthers.

The WSSU struggles began early and continued to haunt the Rams for the rest of the game. The Rams allowed four unearned runs by the Panthers to open the first inning. The Rams also allowed a second inning run by the Panthers to fall behind, 5-0. After allowing four more Panther runs in the third inning, the Rams were able to get on the scoreboard when Frye hit and RBI groundout to score Pullen and left the Rams trailing, 9-1 in the fourth inning. After allowing two more fourth inning runs to the Panthers, the Rams were unable to score in the fifth inning and ended the day with the 11-1 loss.

WSSU senior pitcher Tia Robinson (0-1) took the pitching loss. She started the game and went one full inning before freshman Kara Green came in for three innings. Robinson finished the game with two hits allowed with two strikeouts and five runs scored (one earned). Green finished the game with six runs allowed (three earned) on five hits. She added a pair of strikeouts as well.

Game two of the doubleheader was halted during the second inning due to incoming rain. The Rams will return to action, Saturday, April 11th when the team takes on the Virginia State Trojans at home.
