Bio

LaTaya Hilliard-Gray is no stranger to Winston-Salem State University as she has been with the university and department of athletics since July 2000. LaTaya contributes to the day to day functions of the department as the designated Senior Woman Administrator, Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Athletics, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Advisor and the Head Coach of the softball program.

The 2019-20 unprecedented season was LaTaya’s 19th at the helm of the Ram softball program and 7th as the SWA. Under her guidance, the Rams have made great strides as a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) on and off the playing surfaces. Her dedication to assist in the development of approximately 300 student-athletes has been observed in her facilitation of professional development workshops, educational training sessions and community engagement.

During her career at Winston-Salem State, Hilliard-Gray has compiled a 364-369-2 career record, including spending four seasons competing at the NCAA Division I level. Hilliard-Gray and the Rams have won five conference championships in the last nine years with five NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional appearances. In 2019, they made history being the first CIAA softball program to enter NCAA softball regionals as the seventh seed and winning in the first round of play. For her efforts, Hilliard-Gray is a three time CIAA Coach of the Year and she was also named the NCAA Division I Independent Coach of the Year in 2010.

LaTaya has been involved in competitive sports in some manner, be it playing, coaching or administration for over 28 years. Prior to the start of her coaching career, LaTaya completed an internship with the CIAA gaining knowledge in conference office management, ticket sells and oversight of championship tournaments. Her career at WSSU began as the assistant volleyball coach (2000-2002); head volleyball coach (2003-2006); and assistant softball coach (2001-2002). She is a graduate of NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy, NCAA/NACWAA Institute for Administrative Advancement, a member of Women’s Leaders in College Sports and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

The 2000 graduate of Hampton University obtained a degree in Sport Management. She earned a Master of Science in Adult Education with a concentration in Human Resource Development from North Carolina A&T State University.  LaTaya and her husband Lamont reside in Winston-Salem, N.C.
