Rams Take Opening Day Lead at 2016 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams women's outdoor track & field got a strong start at the 2016 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet. The Rams totaled 43 points on the day behind some great performances in field events. Almost as importantly, the Rams sent several qualifiers into tomorrow's finals where the conference championship will be determined.

The Rams put on a show in the throws events to propel the team to an early lead. Winston-Salem State freshman Halvandria McNeil set the tone when she won the CIAA women's javelin championship with a 117'6" (35.82m) throw. Junior Lyssa Wallace-O'Neal added a third place finish in the women's shot put with a 42'3.5" (12.89m) throw.  

On the track, the Rams had some other great efforts as the team sent several qualifiers into the event finals tomorrow as well as scoring points today. Junior Fawzia Kheir placed second in the women's 1500m run with a 4:41.21 to earn eight of the Rams' total points. Junior Ty-Leah Hampton is poised to strike for the Rams as she placed second in the preliminaries of the women's 100m dash with an 11.92q and she placed third in the preliminaries of the women's 200m dash with a 24.39q. Junior Fawzia Kheir is also poised for a great effort tomorrow as she led the preliminaries of the women's 800m run over national leader Tovea Johnson of host Johnson C. Smith. Junior Tametris Morrison qualified for the finals of the women's 100m hurdles when she placed fourth with a 14.34q. She also qualified for the finals of the women's 400m hurdles when she recorded a 1:01.61q.

With their 43 points, the Rams hold a 10-point lead over the host Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls. Defending champion Saint Augustine's is currently in third place with 29 points.
