CLEMSON, SC – The Winston-Salem State Rams indoor track & field team got their season started in an impressive fashion with some great performances at the Clemson Opener, Saturday. The Rams were especially impressive in sprint events at the meet and they also saw some strong middle distance performances as well.
The Rams' sprinters were strong in their first meet of the season. Senior sprinter Cierra Thompson led the way for the Rams when she placed second in the event with a 7.54. Junior Ma'Kyia Gayden placed third in the event with a 7.67. Freshman Raven Haston placed fifth in the event with a 7.68. All three times were NCAA Division II provisional qualifying times. The Rams were also impressive in the women's 200m dash where Thompson led the Rams once again. She placed fifth in the event with a 25.35 while Haston placed sixth with a 25.40. Gayden came in seventh with a 25.41. Senior Keyona Johnson placed third in the women's 800m run when she ran a 2:27.99. Junior Ojai Brooks placed fifth with a 2:31.41.
In field events, the Rams' jumpers had the best day. Freshman Journe Dundy placed 12th in the women's long jump with a 17' 6.25" (5.34m) jump. In the high jump, freshman Kennedy Alexander placed fifth with a 5' 1.75" (1.57m) leap.
