WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Rams women's indoor track & field team began its quest for a title on day one of the 2020 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track, Sunday afternoon. In addition to getting 15 day one points, the Rams were able to put themselves into a position for a strong finish tomorrow.
The team was especially impressive in the track preliminary events that took place on day one of the meet. The Rams put on a show in the women's 60m dash preliminaries with three of the top six finishes in the event. WSSU senior sprinter Ma'Kyia Gayden led the way with a 7.64 to place second in the event preliminaries while fellow senior Cierra Thompson ran a 7.66. Both times were NCAA Division II provisional qualifying times while freshman Raven Haston ran a 7.72 to place sixth and qualified for the event finals. The Rams were also impressive in the women's 200m dash where junior Victoria Porter placed second with a 25.31 and qualified for the event finals. Fellow junior Aaliyah Burton placed fourth with a 25.41. The duo was equally impressive in the women's 400m run where Porter placed fifth with a 58.01 and Burton placed seventh with a 58.49. Both times were good enough to place the duo in the event finals tomorrow. Sophomore Amique Willis earned a spot in the women's' 60m hurdle finals with a 9.11 to place seventh. In middle distance events, junior Tamia McLean qualified for the women's 800m finals when she place eighth in the event preliminaries with a 2:31.77.
In field events, freshman Kennedy Alexander set the pace for the Rams. She placed third in the women's high jump with a 5'2.25"(1.58m) jump. In the women's long jump, Porter scored once again when she placed seventh with a 17'4.75" (5.18m) jump.
With the team's total 15 points, the Rams stand in fifth place in the team scoring. The team will return to action tomorrow when they close out the 2020 CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
